Taylor Wessing

Yesterday I visited the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 09 and was really inspired to take portraits. For this project I will beigin by photographing cyclists with their bikes. Sounds like a basic start point but I found yesterday portraits can be very powerful images.

Fixie Culture

Fixie's are fixed wheeled bicycles and becoming more and more popular. They look similar in appearance to Racing road bikes but are built stronger and often have a more fashionable look to them. Racing riders have never been seen as the 'cool' cyclists yet now fixie bikes are taking off. They are used for tricks and riding through London one weekend I noticed along brick lane people use them as fashion accessories.

Cycling has always been my main hobby in life. I have changed my mind on which kind of cycling I do but at this stage in my life I am almost a fixie rider.

Freedom

After a discussion with a friend about debt after university and the feeling of constant pressure from our loans we decided her aspiration would be freedom. I thought immediately that balloons show freedom beautifully. Red balloons contrasting the blue sky and the pale landscape I feel will balance this shot and make it very strong.

Skill

From an interview with my mum who said if she could be anything she would be a rockstar but for the talent of a rockstar we decided her aspiration was to be skillful.

I have decided to display this as a master craftsman who is towering over a city they have built.

Location

  • High focal over cityscape
  • High rise or car park
  • Top of council offices
  • Fletcher building
  • Leicester or Newbury? Scout both locations
  • Colour High contrast blue colour palette to be contrasted by a red on the model.

Fame

Here is a vague set sketch with the notes for my image to portray fame inspired from an interview from which, I, with the interveiwee, decided that their aspiration is attention from fame.

  • Female Model on set dressed up for fashion shoot. Red Umbrella.
  • Confident model.
  • Lights and cables included in image
  • Photographer shooting from laptop?/A number of photographers?
  • Shooting from Laptop will show the actual image on the screen
  • With a number of photographers they will be blurred to show a number of angles
  • Artistic assitance on set
  • Confetti and fans

Ryno de Wet

Another Photographer for potential locational inspiration. I think for this project he would have been using a colour pallette. Also found on Poller contemporary

From the website Poller Contemporary

"About the work

For the past four years I have traveled throughout America and Eastern Europe photographing sites that represent important political and social events in contemporary world history. My most recent project in Afghanistan is a continuation of this larger conceptual body of work. Acting as a kind of visual historian I seek to create images that convey a unique and important view of select aspects of World History. Within architecture and landscapes I find my true subject, the detritus of civilization, and seek to explore the way we define and relate to its existence. Although creating precisely composed and executed images I carefully chose projects that have a conceptual meaning and importance beyond their visual interest or beauty. These images from Afghanistan encompass and express the intents of my vision as an artist.

All images are photographed with a Deardorff 8x10 inch camera on Fuji negative film. Final print sizes vary from 30x40 inches to 50x60 inches and are in an edition of 5."

As a potential location I love this shot. Very open and available for addition in both colour and props. I may use this to try superimposing models and bits. Obviously the rights to this image do not belong to me so i cannot publish any as my own. I may find similar locations in the large buildings. The building looks deserted.

The Stage I Am At

Currently I am in the process of location scouting for this project.

1. High viewpoint over a clustered city.

  • Leicester
  • London
  • Reading

2. Rural cornfield

  • Berkshire

3. Studio

  • DMU photographic studio (will need to be shot with model present)

4.  Night Urban

  • Leicester Industrial Estate
  • Newbury Industrial Estate
  • Graffitti area (similar to simen johan feel)

Red as a Theme?

To link my shots together red could work as a metaphor for something

Capturing convincing emotion

In an essay which i have just done on Simen Johan I reasearched into staged photography as i have always felt capturing true emotion has to come naturally. I found johan tended to shoot his models deadpan. Also he works with children models so it is easier.

I feel in this shot i captured the feeling of emotion.

Colour Theory

Working now in my third year on this course I don't feel i need to be be too condescending about colour theory but as for my personal taste i often use red to contrast and bring interest to the shots.

I found this image on the website www.nomorebrains.co.uk. I really like this idea for my project and may create something quite similar as I am really inspired by the red balloons. The only problem I can think of is being able to suspend the ballons as i have no access to helium yet I have access to photoshop. The image is very light in essence. The shot gives you a great feeling of freedom. I find it quite similar to the dvd cover of Hard Candy.

I find this image also very intesting with the innocense encased in a bear trap which actually sums the film up very well. I am obviously attracted to the colour red in these shots.
